How to spot when the experience isn’t built for you, and what to do instead.
Getting a custom suit should be exciting. Empowering, even. But for too many LGBTQ+ folks, the process ends up feeling like a compromise - or worse, a rejection. Whether it’s outdated ideas of gender, a lack of understanding about body diversity, or just poor service masked as luxury, not all tailoring experiences are created equal.
Here are 5 red flags to watch out for when shopping for an inclusive LGBTQ+ suit:
🚩 1. “We only do men’s or women’s suits.”
If a tailor or brand can’t see beyond the binary, they’re probably not going to see you either. A suit should reflect your identity - not push you into a box you’ve spent your life stepping out of. If you’re non-binary, genderfluid, trans, or just don’t see yourself in traditional categories, don’t settle for a shop that won’t meet you where you are.
🚩 2. You’re being pressured into buying.
High-pressure tactics, rushed decisions, or being nudged towards something you’re unsure about? That’s a no. A custom suit is a collaboration. You deserve time to think, explore, and make a choice that feels right for you, not someone else’s sales target.
🚩 3. They say yes to everything.
It might sound ideal, but a good suit designer will gently steer you away from things that won’t work, and help you land on something that does. You’re not just paying for fabric, you’re investing in expertise. Respectful, considered input is part of the process.
🚩 4. They don’t ask questions.
Custom means custom. If they’re not asking about your style, your comfort, your body, and what makes you feel like you, it’s not really custom - it’s just a templated suit with your name on the invoice.
🚩 5. It just doesn’t feel right.
This one’s hard to define, but powerful. If something feels off - if you feel overlooked, misunderstood, or not welcome - trust your gut. It matters. You deserve to feel seen.
At Queer Suits You, we don’t believe in “making do.” We believe your suit should start with you - your story, your body, and how you want to feel when you put it on.
That’s why every suit we make starts with a free 30-minute discovery call. No pressure, no pitch - just a chance to chat, explore ideas, and see if we’re the right fit for each other.
